Amygdala
- You are afraid of a snake? Amygdala is on the move.
Amygdala plays
important role in emotional memories. Amygdala
receives a variety of inputs from all lobes of cerebral cortex,
hippcampus, and cingulate gyrus. And also virtually all the
sensory information is delivered to a particular nuclear called
basolateral nuclei in amygdala. The bilateral lesion of amygdala
resulted in flattening emotions, reduced fear as well as some effects
on aggression and memory. There are reports that amygdalectomized
rats approach a cat without hesitation. In case of human(S.M.),
there is a case of bilateral damage to amydgala due to Urbach-Wiethe
disease, which is reported by Dr. Adolf Rudolf. S.M. has normal
intelligence and is
perfectly able to identify people from photographs. However, she
has difficulty to recognize the photograph of people expressing certain
emotion. She is able to recognize the face of happiness,
sadness and disgust. Description of angry is somewhat
impaired, and that of fear is severely impaired. In addition,
electric stimulation of amygdala in human has been reported to lead to
anxiety and fear.
